Fake Puppies in the Browser Window

It’s the gift-giving season, and many put a new pet on their holiday wish lists. We buy everything from clothing to furniture on the Internet, so perhaps it’s natural to search online for a pet. Sadly, it’s often the set-up for cybercrime. The Internet is full of imitators and fraudsters offering cheap Siberian husky puppies, Yorkies, bulldogs, Capuchin monkeys, parrots and other “boutique” animals. "Don’t be fooled by pet scams!" urges said Walter Woolf, VMD, owner of Air Animal Pet Movers, one of the six founders of the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association.

A quick online search for online puppy scams returns hundreds of warnings from the IPATA, the ASPCA, the Better Business Bureau and others. They warn online pet scams are increasing “at an alarming rate.”
After you wire the money or send those Amazon gift cards to buy the fake doggies in the window, the scammer asks for more money for refundable insurance, special flight kennels, permits, veterinary testing. Caveat emptor.
“These cyber criminals steal the identities of reputable breeders and pet shippers to appeal to your soft side and steal your money,” said Woolf.
"To buy a pet, talk with the actual breeder. Get to know them. Visit the breeder. Ask questions. Ask for a minimum of three satisfied customer phone numbers and call them. A cyber pet seller will never share the name of the breeder or a telephone contact number," Woolf warned.
Best bets to buy a pet:
1. Don’t hurry. Thoroughly check their references and reviews.
2. Get complete details on the proposed shipping company moving your new pet and call them to confirm that they know and work with the breeder before sending money.
3. Analyze the pet seller’s website. Scammers are known to illegally copy legitimate websites.
4. The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires licensing or registration for every breeder, dealer, pet transporter or carrier. Check their registration with the USDA.
5. The American Kennel Club hosts an online source for reputable AKC-registered breeders at marketplace.akc.org. Having “AKC” in the email address or website name does not guarantee the breeder is an AKC breeder.
There are ways pet lovers can effectively fight back if they have been scammed. Contact any of the following agencies to identify and report pet fraud. There are no free puppies or free lunches.

Australia & New Zealand: My Favorite Pet Moves

Ask Jessica Nickler about her favorite moves and her face lights up about helping clients move to Australia and New Zealand. "It's a personal and professional challenge. From start to finish clients need to plan ahead six months. I have the opportunity to work with clients long enough to create a relationship that I hope they find as rewarding as I do," she said.

Australia and New Zealand do not have rabies, so their animal import regulations guard their country's bio-security. Jessica manages two to three Australia and New Zealand each month completing nearly 80 moves in four years. She shared three things which are really important.

1) Following the DAFF Veterinary protocol is critical to a successful move.  If something isn't done correctly at any step the move will be delayed. Every required test and treatment must be done by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. A veterinarian who has applied for accreditation is not good enough. They must be certified at the time of the blood draw. Even if the veterinarian is experienced in international pet travel, we recommend allowing Air Animal to handle the timeline and documentation.  Dog owners should expect a minimum of at least four veterinary visits and cat owners should expect a minimum of three visits to complete the required protocols.

"There are two types of rabies antibody titer tests--FAVN-OIE and RFFIT. Only the FAVN-OIE is acceptable in Australia and New Zealand. The testing must be run at the approved lab or it won't be accepted," she warned.

2) Acclimating pets to the flight kennel is important. Pets moving to Australia and New Zealand are often in their kennels for 20-24 hours. The flight itself is around 16 hours. Add in drop off and pick up times on either end and it adds up. "If your pet feels the kennel is theirs--it's their safe space--it reduces anxiety. Unfortunately, there's no way to cut down the flight time for a move to this region," she said.

3) A minimum 10 days of quarantine is required. "Australia and New Zealand animal quarantine is a no man's land of information because their number one mission is bio-security. You will not get updates and photos from quarantine. The adage of no news is good news, is applicable for quarantine in this region," Jessica advised.  Quarantine extensions beyond the mandatory 10 days are rare.

Many times, the family needs to relocate ahead of the pet and leaves their loved one in the care of family or a caretaker who is left to complete the final protocols for the pet’s departure. Communication between all parties is critical. Air Animal works to identify all the parties who will be responsible for the many moving parts early in the move. This often means speaking with the owners after hours due to time differences. Everyone must be on the same page.

"I'm thankful clients trust me and my pet moving team members to manage all the details for such a long journey for their family pets. And, I have many fond memories to go with the thank yous. One family sent me a framed photo of their dog wrapped in the Australian and American flags. Murphy was an Air Animal Facebook cover dog for several months."

Pets from ‘Unlisted” Countries at Risk for UK Quarantine

Pet dogs, cats and ferrets vaccinated for rabies in "unlisted" countries may be quarantined for three months or returned to the United States when entering the UK, according to new guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service.

This applies even when the vaccines themselves have been approved for use in the United States.

If your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination occurred in a country that is NOT listed in the file below, Air Animal recommends re-vaccinating pets in one of the countries in the list. The pet must not travel for 21 days and must meet all the other criteria for UK entry. UK quarantine can be quite expensive, and travel stress your pet may experience could be compounded by being separated from you.

When traveling internationally with a pet, we also recommend you carry vaccination records that indicate the pet’s microchip ID, date of rabies vaccination, vaccine manufacturer, vaccine serial number, the date the vaccination expires and veterinarian’s name and address. Air Animal clients may use our free mobile app so all this information is available anytime in your phone or desktop browser.

Countries with Rabies Vaccination Protocols Accepted by the UK
Part I
Countries referred to in Article 13(1) of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013
Andorra, Switzerland, Faeroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Croatia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Vatican City State.

Part II
Countries and included territories referred to in Article 12(2) of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013
Ascension Island; Antigua and Barbuda; Argentina; Australia; Aruba; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Barbados; Bahrain; Bermuda; Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (the BES Islands); Belarus; Canada; Chile; Curacao; Fiji; Falkland Islands; Hong Kong; Jamaica; Japan; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Cayman Islands; Saint Lucia; Montserrat; Mauritius; Mexico; Malaysia; Mayotte; New Caledonia; New Zealand; French Polynesia; Saint Pierre and Miquelon; Russia; Singapore, Saint Helena; Sint Maarten; Trinidad and Tobago; Taiwan; United Arab Emirates; United States of America including American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; British Virgin Islands; Vanatu; Wallis and Futuna.

Hawaii Cuts Stateside Quarantine by 66%

Aloha! Beginning Aug. 31, 2018 the at-home mainland quarantine for dogs and cats entering Hawaii will be 30 days from the day the rabies antibody blood test (FAVN-OIE) reaches the testing lab. That’s down from 120 days.

The shorter time frame means veterinary appointments for the required additional vaccinations and parasite treatments must be completed more quickly. Turning the details over to one of our expert pet movers will reduce your stress, and our online app streamlines documentation. Our friend Tank traveled to Hawaii.

Please note Guam still requires a 120-day stateside at-home quarantine.

Current UK Rabies Vaccination Regs

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Britain’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs is using the following criteria to determine appropriate rabies documentation for pet dogs, cats and ferrets entering the United Kingdom:

  • If a microchip was not implanted before rabies vaccination, then all previous rabies vaccinations are invalid.
  • The first rabies vaccination after microchip implantation is considered the "primary vaccine," and is ONLY valid for one-year, regardless of whether the animal has been current on all prior rabies vaccinations.
  • Therefore, if an animal travels more than 12 months after the first rabies vaccination post-microchip, then the owner must provide documentation that a booster was given within 12 months of this "primary vaccine."
  • If the owner cannot provide such documentation, then the animal will be re-vaccinated and held 21 days in quarantine in the UK at the owner's expense.

Air Animal follows this specific DEFRA protocol so our clients are not delayed by short-term quarantines when they arrive in the UK.

Air Animal helped Pearl, a toy poodle, and her pet parents relocate successfully to the UK this spring.

UK Requires Pets on TOR

Even though the United Kingdom may have ruled your household goods are exempt from Her Majesty’s Value Added Tax, you must list your pet(s) because they may be subject to VAT.

As soon as you know your PCS post is to the UK, go online and complete a Transfer of Residence form listing household goods, cars and your pets. The UK will send you a TOR reference number.

Not having a TOR reference number will not prohibit your pet from entering the UK. But, you may have to pay VAT on arrival. If you do pay, you have 12 months to apply for reimbursement.

Island Paradise PCS

We highly recommend using Air Animal’s Destination Pet Express for all active duty military personnel moving pets to Okinawa, Japan; Catania, Italy; and other island posts. Both Japan and Italy have only two or three airports that have Custom’s clearance for pets. That means the pets land and then either transfer to a domestic airline or travel by land and ferry to reach your new post.

These transfers can add $2,500 to $3,500 to the base cost of a move. Air Animal Destination Pet Express handles the details from the airport to your new post home so you don’t have to. “If you’re being stationed on an island, request an estimate online as soon as you get written or verbal orders,” advises Jessica, international pet move manager. “You'll hear from your assigned pet mover in a timely manner based upon the move date you select.”

Cute and Tough to Relocate

Many airlines limit the types of breeds they will ship—especially if the departure or arrival airport temperature is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Mushy-faced breeds such as bulldogs, boxers and Himalayan cats are typically on the no-fly lists because their airways are genetically constricted and these breeds have had problems breathing during flight.

United, American and Delta airlines have all announced limits on the types of animals and breeds they will accept on board. (Links to

Delta

You want your fur baby to be comfortable and safe during a move. "Active duty military who redeploy frequently may wish to consider adopting a pet under 25-inches tall with a pointy nose,” advises Maria, international pet move manager. “Depending on the season, we may be able to get your pet to your destination and not able to fly them out when you need to get to your next duty station. We often work with a buddy who can foster the pet until the temperatures allow air flight for pets.”

Going to Minot

Prepare to drive your pet to a distant airport if you’re posting to or from Minot, North Dakota or Alaska among others.

“Our Air Force clients love Great Danes,” said Jessica, international pet move manager. “When you adopt a large pet, you get a lot of love and more headaches for your move because large 700P kennels will not fit through the doors of the 737s now flying most airline routes,” she counsels. Large dogs must be driven to a major hub to catch a large jet. Then, owners must drive to the destination hub to retrieve their pets.

Pets less than 25-inches tall, paws to the top of the ears, can relocate more easily because their travel kennels fit on most airliners. The largest accepted on the most-frequently used airplanes is a 500p which is 40"Lx27"Wx30"H. Watch our video to learn more about travel kennel requirements. You might also find the 411 on Travel Kennels helpful.

Which Vet to Get?

Active duty military have the option to use a military veterinarian for all required treatments, tests and endorsed pet health certificates for most countries that follow the European Union pet import rules. For example, Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom also follow EU protocols. If your PCS is anywhere else, you must have a USDA-endorsed health certificate when leaving the U.S. with your pet.

A pet health certificate is required when returning to the U.S., but USDA-endorsement is not required.

If your posting is to Australia, United Arab Emirates or other non-typical location, call your veterinarian as soon as you receive orders. If your veterinarian is not familiar with the requirements, we can help you through our streamlined pet health certificate service. Air Animal’s expert pet movers will help you follow all the import rules to a “T” because these countries don’t make special allowances for U.S. military personnel. A USDA-endorsed health certificate will be required.

Grants to Pay for Pet PCS

Dogs on Deployment is one of several organization which offer grants to help active duty military E-6 and below relocate their pets. You’ll be asked to provide financial information, orders and other information. Many of our PCS clients have used Dogs on Deployment and paid it forward later by making a donation.

Funding for a PCS move isn’t released until orders are cut. Air Animal’s pet movers know the drill and they know things change because they’ve been there. “Our family was moving from Ohio to Missouri when my dad was redeployed. The moving van had left and we were in the car ready to pull out when Dad got a call. They asked if he wanted to move to Missouri as planned or if he wanted to go to Boston. We went to Boston,” said Deandra, international pet move manager. “We know we have to be flexible because you serve our country and you have to go where you’re needed.”

PCS to Japan, Guam, South Korea and Hawaii

Rabies Antibody Blood Test a Must

If you are active duty military and plan moving your pet with you when your Permanent Change of Station orders come through, make the time to get a rabies antibody blood test (FAVN-OIE). Some of the most-frequent PCS duty stations are in countries that require the test. You won’t need one if you’re relocating to the European Union.

On-base veterinarians can provide the required blood test, which is sent to Ft. Sam Houston for processing. Off-base veterinarians use a lab in Kansas. When you use Air Animal’s app, the test date will be on your phone or desktop so you never lose track of it. You’ll be ready when it’s time to get a pet health certificate for the move.

Special situations
  • If you’re moving to Japan and living on base, the 180 days of pre-export U.S. residence for your pet is waived.
  • If you’re posting to Guam, you can’t take a pet and you can’t get your pet off the island if it is over 25 inches tall—paws to top of the ears. The airline serving Guam limits flight kennel sizes. The largest accepted is 500p which is 40"Lx27"Wx30"H. Watch our two videos to learn more about travel kennel requirements and the 411 on Travel Kennels.
  • For PCS to South Korea, active-duty military may clear South Korean customs without a custom’s broker. That means our affordable Timeline & Ticket rates are an option for you.
  • Hawaii is part of the United States. It's also an island that doesn't have rabies so a FAVN-OIE is required. Beginning Aug. 31, 2018 the at-home mainland quarantine for dogs and cats entering Hawaii will be 30 days from the day the rabies antibody blood test (FAVN-OIE) reaches the testing lab. That’s down from 120 days.

Is Your Pet Fit to Fly?

Taking your pet on a plane? No matter if your pet is flying cargo or cabin, make sure your pet is fit to fly--especially if your fur baby is a first time flyer. Our founder, Walter M. Woolf, VMD, gave useful tips to pet owners to WTSP-TV news reporter Josh Sidorowicz.

Pets on a Plane

Three important take-aways

  1. Take your pet to a veterinarian for a check-up before the flight
  2. Get a pet health certificate
  3. Avoid sedating your pet. Sedation  slows breathing. 40% of pet deaths in the air result from breathing issues.

EuRA Recognizes Woolfs as Exceptional Partners

The Executive Group of EuRA, the European Relocation Association, surprised Air Animal founder Dr. Walter Woolf and his wife Linda with the Exceptional Partnership Award during its annual meeting in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

"Loving, loyal and longevity. Three words that come to mind when we think of the recipients," Michelle Bramstoft, EuRA Northern Region, told the assembled members.

"Visionaries of their time, founders of professional associations who have also fostered industry alliances," added Isabel Cudel, EuRA Sothern Region. "Both are blessed with partners in business and in life--who are the bubbles in their champagne."

The EuRA Executive Group recognized Walter and Linda for their commitment and loyalty to each other and to the EuRA family.

“Air Animal joined EuRA in 2008 and we regularly participate in their information-sharing conferences," said Dr. Woolf. "Funny story. We had no idea we were being recognized, and we chose to sit in one of the side banquet rooms with EuRA friends so we could talk more easily. When they called our name, we didn’t hear it! Linda and I were floored to be recognized.”

When Can Puppies Travel?

One of our Facebook friends who recently moved overseas asked if she’d be able to bring her new puppy back to the U.S.

According to Centers for Disease Control regulations, puppies can enter the U.S. if they are at least four months old. They must be vaccinated against rabies at three months and at least 30 days before their flights. The import and vaccination documents must be in English. The puppy may also have to be quarantined at the residence. According to new U.S. Department of Agriculture rules, puppies entering the U.S. for resale or adoption must now meet all those requirements and must be at least six months old and receive a special permit.

2018 Video Podcasts Live

Our first four video podcasts are live on our YouTube channel. Walter Woolf, VMD, shares pet transportation tips cautioning against tranquilizing pets, what to do before moving to Mexico with pets, and special arrangements that may need to be made when moving large pets. He also discloses how clients can reap big benefits by using Air Animal’s new mobile pet moving app.

USDA Changes Rules for Importing Dogs

The US Department of Agriculture issued new guidelines for those importing dogs for commercial resale or adoption. Under the Animal Welfare Act regulations, individuals and businesses (including non-profit organizations) must obtain a permit to import a dog into the United States for resale or adoption purposes. A new FAQ  explains the federal requirements, exemptions and provides contact information for additional information.

Air Animal Recommends Canine Flu Vaccine Before Travel

(March 15, 2018) – The Ides of March are not being kind to pet owners relocating or traveling to New Zealand with their dogs. The island country’s import protocol takes 4 to 7-months. This week, New Zealand began refusing dogs unless the import documents prove Fluffy has been vaccinated for canine influenza.

Penny and Bella move to New
Zealand from Minneapolis, MN
Air Animal urges all pet owners to vaccinate their dogs against canine influenza before travel of any kind.

"Dog flu is easily prevented by visiting your veterinarian for two doses of the canine flu vaccine,” said Dr. Walter Woolf, VMD, Air Animal's veterinarian founder. “The first vaccination provides partial immunity. The second vaccination given about two weeks later is a booster which gives stronger protection."

According to Woolf, New Zealand and other countries now requiring dog flu vaccination usually accept a recent booster shot if the documents show full previous immunization and the booster administration date.

There are two types of canine influenza vaccines. Ask your veterinarian which she recommends.
Zoetis – Vanguard CIV H3N2/H3N8 – 2 vaccinations, 3 weeks apart. Considered fully vaccinated 7 days after the second shot.
Merck – Nobivac CIV H3N2/H3N8 – 2 vaccinations, 2 weeks apart.  Considered fully vaccinated 14 days after the second shot.

Flu in dogs is potentially dangerous and a very communicable respiratory disease. Dogs that come down with the flu develop fevers and coughs that last one to three weeks. You may notice decreased appetite, lethargy and a greenish discharge from the nose and eyes. Some dogs develop higher fevers and pneumonia. Severe flu cases can cause death.

If you’re traveling with your dog--especially to an overseas destination--this ounce of prevention really is better than a pound of cure.

Happy Chinese New Year!

It’s the Year of the Dog

The dog is the 11th of 12 Chinese Zodiac symbols. In Chinese culture, your zodiac sign can be used to determine your fortune for the year, marriage compatibility, career fit, best times to have a baby and more. Ancient Chinese legend holds that the Jade Emperor decreed the earthly calendar would be represented by 12 animals, and he ordered the beasts and birds of the world come to a party at the palace. The first dozen animals to arrive became the Chinese Zodiac.

Nearly a New Year’s Ball Drop

A few weeks ago a young man walked into our Tampa office asking to ship his pet from Tampa to Dubai via Paris the next day with a Monday arrival. Well that Monday happened to be New Year’s Day. No way, Jose!

He’d worked on this move for months on his own without realizing that on worldwide holidays passenger airline connections can be undependable. Airlines also often cancel or limit live animal shipments during busy holiday travel times. Our international pet move manager explained everything. With Air Animal’s help, our new client traveled to the UAE as scheduled. His pet stayed with a friend in Tampa and boarded a flight from Tampa to Dubai connecting through Frankfurt the following week. Do it yourself snafu solved.

Our pet movers know the drill. They keep track of holidays, regulations, local customs and details so you don’t have to. Pet Moving Made Easy®. It’s our passion, our focus and your peace of mind.

Delta, Others Change Emotional Support Animal Rules

Delta, United and American airlines are implementing new rules for emotional-support animals.

Delta's policy
United's policy
American's policy

The airlines and passengers complain poorly training and uncertified support animals increasingly disrupt flights. The animals misbehave, wander the cabin, defecate and sometimes bite passengers.

On Delta, passengers must provide a veterinary health form or vaccination record for either both service and emotional support animals. For comfort animals and psychiatric-service animals, passengers must also provide:

  • A letter signed by a doctor or licensed mental-health professional stating the passenger’s need for the animal.
  • A signed letter stating the animal is trained to behave without a kennel.

“This new policy is our first step in better protecting those who fly with Delta with a more thoughtful screening process,” said John Laughter, Delta’s senior vice president for corporate safety, security and compliance.
